TRAVEL GUIDE

DEPARTURE FROM BANGKOK (for participants from Vietnam, Thailand, Myammar, Laos and Cambodia)

Participants coming from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, are advised to take a land transport (bus/train) or air flight to Bangkok. Below is the appropriate route to UUM from Bangkok.

v  By train: Bangkok to Hatyai 

Bangkok’s Hualamphong Train station → Hatyai Train Station → Sadao / Dannok Immigration → Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex.

Take an Overnight Train on Thai Railway’s Southern Train Line from Bangkok's Hualamphong Train Station to Hat Yai Train Station. Hat Yai is the 'Southern Hub' for all trains going to Malaysia.

  • Rapid Trains fare range from THB259 – THB755 depending on the class. Trains go via Surat Thani, Chumphon, Hua Hin etc.
  • Special Express fare range from THB339 – THB1394 depending on the class.

When you arrived at Hat Yai Station in the morning, there are restaurants and food vendors along all of the streets surrounding the station. The Hat Yai Train Station is centrally located for the convenient transfer to Bus or Minivan service. There are many Travel Agencies near the station, including the one right across the street. From Hat Yai Train Station you can simply walk into a nearby travel agency and buy a ticket for the next bus or minivan service to Dannok (Thailand) / Bukit Kayu Hitam (Malaysia) Border Crossing. Taxi fare is THB700 (one taxi) and THB55 per person by minivan.

The Malaysian Immigration checkpoint at Bukit Kayu Hitam as well as the  Thailand, Sadao immigration checkpoint (although it is at the border town of Danok) is opened from 6.00 am to 12.00 midnight. Thai immigration formalities, (officially called the Sadao Immigration Checkpoint) which used to be conducted at Sadao town but has since moved to Dannok just before the border gate into Malaysia. The town on the Malaysian side is Bukit Kayu Hitam. Note that the distance between the Thailand Immigration (Dannok town) and Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex checkpoints is about 700 meter and  is quite a short distance to walk. Otherwise, you can take a motorcycle or taxi ride between these two points.

We will be welcoming you with a signage at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex, for a free pickup service. 

v  By Flight: Bangkok to Hatyai

Bangkok Don Mueng Airport or BangkokSuvarnabhumi Airport Hatyai International Airport → Sadao/Dannok Immigration → Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex

The Hatyai International Airport (HDY) is about 50km from Malaysia – Thailand border. There are Thai Airways and other budget airlines flying this route Tiger Airways from Singapore, Nok Air, Thai Air Asia and Thai Lion Air from Bangkok. The details of the flight services to Hat Yai are as below:

1. Nok Air from Bangkok Don Mueang (Domestic)

2. Thai AirAsia from BangkokDon Mueang and Chiang Mai (Domestic)

3. Thai Lion Air from BangkokDon Mueang and Udon Thani (Domestic)

4. Thai Airways from BangkokSuvarnabhumi (Domestic)

From Hatyai International Airport to Malaysia – Thailand Border (Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex):

To get to Malaysia – Thailand Border (Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex), there is an Airport Limousine service located on the 1st floor in front of the Domestic Arrival hall. Tickets are sold at the counter of the Public transport service outside the terminal (on foot is 100 meters). Taxi service charge is at a flat rate of THB800 for one taxi from the Hatyai Airport to MalaysiaThailand Border. It is about 50km to the Malaysian border. Travelling on a good surfaced road and depending on the number of vehicles on the road, the road journey will take about 45 to 60 minutes. .

Participants coming from Philippines, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia are advised to either take a land transport (bus/train) or an air flight to KualaLumpur. Below is the appropriate route to UUM from Kuala Lumpur.

v  By Flight: Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang → Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, Alor Star

The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport (AOR), Alor Star is about 45 km from Universiti Utara Malaysia. There are Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) (http://www.klia.com.my/) and other budget airlines flying this route Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2); (http://gatewayklia2.com.my/) Malindo Air and Firefly from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport, Kuala LumpurSubang. The details on the flight services to Alor Star as below:

1. Malaysia Airlines (http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/) from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

2. Air Asia (http://www.airasia.com/) from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2).

v  By Train: Kuala Lumpur to Arau Railway Station (Perlis)

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang →Kuala Lumpur Sentral → Arau Railway Station, Perlis

Kuala Lumpur Sentral (www.klsentral.com.my (http://www.klsentral.com.my)) or Sentral Kuala Lumpur is a transitoriented development that houses the main railway station of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. KL Sentral is designed as an intermodal transport hub. Most of Kuala Lumpur's passenger rail lines serve KL Sentral, while many intercity trains serving Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore start there.

From KLIA and KLIA2 to KL Sentral

Option 1: KLIA or KLIA2 to KL Sentral by Express Railway Link (ERL)

ERL (www.kliaekspres.com (http://www.kliaekspres.com)) is the fastest way and it takes only 30 minutes to the Kuala Lumpur city centre. The Express Rail links the KLIA and KLIA2 with KL Sentral. The ticket counters are on Level 1 of the KLIA complex and also at Level 2 KLIA2 complex. From the departure and arrival halls, follow the signage for the KLIA express. There are 2 KLIA express rail trains and the schedules are as follows:

  • A nonstop direct train from KLIA and KLIA2 to KL Sentral called the KLIA Express
  • A transit train which stops at Putrajaya & Cyberjaya enroute to KL Sentral called the KLIA transit.

Fare on both the Ekspres and Transit are RM35 for oneway.

Option 2: KLIA or KLIA2 to KL Sentral by Airport Limo / Budget Taxi

Travellers can choose from taxi and limo services offered by Airport Limo from KLIA and KLIA2 to KL Sentral. The taxi and limo services at KLIA and KLIA2 operate through a coupon system that you can purchase at the Airport Limo counters at the International and Domestic Arrival Hall. Alternatively, metered taxi is available at level 1 and 3 of the Main Terminal Building KLIA and Level 1 of the Gateway@KLIA2 building. (mailto:Gateway@KLIA2 building.) Passengers have to purchase RM2 coupon prior to boarding these taxis. Distance between KLIA / KLIA2 and KL Sentral is 60.04 km. The journey will take about 45 minutes and the taxi fares from RM80.00 (one taxi).

Option 3: KLIA or KLIA2 to KL Sentral by bus (Airport Coach / Aerobus / Skybus)

Once you arrived at KLIA, please proceed to the KLIA bus station situated at Ground Floor Block C annex to the main terminal building which is just 3 minutes walking distance from the arrival hall exit. Please get your ticket at Airport Coach counter No 3. The bus will depart to KL Sentral from platform 1 KLIA bus station.

For KLIA2 from the international arrival hall you have to walk straight for about 3 minutes until you see an escalator. Once you reached the lower level, you can see on your left the SkyBus terminal (www.skybus.com.my (http://www.skybus.com.my)) and on your right you will see the SkyBus ticket booth.RM10 per person is the standard rate from KLIA2 to KL Sentral.

NOTE # Malindo Air and Firefly passengers will arrived at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang. The best way to get to KL Sentral is by taxi. From the airport it normally takes around 25 minutes to reach KL Sentral. Taxi fares are around RM20/RM25 on the meter.

From KL Sentral to Arau Railway Station, Perlis

Train from KL Sentral to Arau (please check the destination under the state of Perlis) that is served by Keretapi Tanah Melayu's (www.ktmb.com.my (http://www.ktmb.com.my)). Ekpress Langkawi which runs daily between Kuala Lumpur and Hat Yai via Butterworth in Penang. Trains for Hat Yai leave at 9.20 pm and arrived in Arau at 7.56 am (next day). The Economy Class ticket available from RM38 for single trip.

We will be welcoming you with a signage at the station. and will be providing a free pick-up service from Arau Railway Station to UUM.

v  By Bus: Kuala Lumpur to Changlun Bus Station

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang →Pudu Sentral → Changlun Bus Station

Pudu Sentral (formerly known as Puduraya) is the biggest and most centrally located bus station of Kuala Lumpur. In case, you want to take a bus to various destinations around the peninsula (or to Singapore or Thailand), then this is the right place for you to get the bus tickets. There are many ticket counters on the first level at Pudu Sentral, to purchase your bus tickets. It might be a wise decision to go for the VIP or Executive bus agencies to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

From KLIA and KLIA2 to Pudu Sentral

Option 1: KLIA or KLIA2 to Pudu Sentral by bus (Star Shuttle (http://www.starwira.com/))

The STAR SHUTTLE which is operating within airport (KLIA / KLIA2) to Pudu Sentral. Star Shuttle has the objective to provide a direct, nonstop shuttle service from airport KLIA and KLIA2. Star shuttle is famous for its quality service, affordable, comfortable ride and reasonable price to the passengers.

Once you arrived at KLIA, please proceed to the KLIA bus station situated at the Ground Floor Block C annex to the  main terminal building which is just 3 minutes walking distance from the arrival hall exit. The Star Shuttle bus will depart to Pudu Sentral from platform 1 KLIA bus station.

For KLIA2, the bus terminal is located in level 1 with ticket counters located in International and Domestic Arrival area in level 2. The rates depend on the destination, but a one way transfer between KLIA2 and KL Sentral starts at RM10.

Option 2: KLIA or KLIA2 to Pudu Sentral by Express Railway Link (ERL) and Light Rail Transit (LRT)

ERL (www.kliaekspres.com) is the fastest way and it takes a mere 30 minutes to the Kuala Lumpur city centre. The Express Rail links the KLIA and KLIA2 with KL Sentral. The ticket counter are on Level 1 of the KLIA complex and also at Level 2 KLIA2 complex. From the departure and arrival halls, follow the signage for the KLIA express. The Penang International Airport (PEN) (http://www.penangairport.com/) is situated in the Bayan Lepas area that at southeast of Penang Island, Malaysia. The airport is located 14 km (8.7 mi) away from George Town, the capital city of Penang. There are budget airlines flies this route Tiger Airways, Silk Air, Airasia, Lion Air, Jetstar Asia, Firefly and Sriwijaya Air. The details flight service to Penang as below:

The Butterworth Bus terminal (Penang Sentral) located at the centre of Butterworth (in the mainland) which also act as main transit terminal for Seberang Perai. Penang Sentral and is being touted as the "gateway to the Northern Corridor of Malaysia".

From Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral

Option 1: Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral by taxi.

Taxi at the Penang International airport is managed by a consortium, by using the coupon system. Coupon can be purchased at the counter just outside the arrival hall, immediately after the custom clearance area.. After purchasing the coupon, go directly to the taxi waiting area, there will a taxi driver waiting for you. No other outside vehicle is allowed to pick up passenger from the airport. Fix price, no negotiation is required. The journey will take about 30 minutes by crossing the Penang Bridge and the taxi fares are from RM85.00 (one taxi).

From Penang Sentral to Changlun Bus Station
